Ventilated brake disc Brembo 09.A819.11, sold in pairs. New condition with damaged packaging. The vehicle's braking system is crucial for the safety of the driver, passengers, and other road users. Brake system failures rank second among vehicle-related accidents, following tire failures.
Brake pads and discs should be replaced regularly based on driving style. Aggressive driving and frequent emergency braking lead to quicker wear of brake components. Accelerated wear may also result from delayed maintenance, mechanical damage, or low-quality parts. Maintenance includes lubricating brake caliper guides with high-temperature grease during each pad replacement, replacing worn parts (brake pads, brake discs, caliper shims), and changing brake fluid.
Common causes of mechanical damage include warping of discs and pads from sudden cooling (driving through puddles or car washes) and the ingress of sand or stones, leading to chipping and uneven wear. Using lower-quality parts can also contribute to rapid wear.
Brake discs can be categorized as ventilated or solid, smooth, perforated, or slotted. They are made from various materials: cast iron discs are the cheapest, offering excellent friction properties but are susceptible to thermal shock. Stainless steel discs provide similar thermal resistance but are not as friction-resistant. Carbon discs are lightweight with high friction coefficients but are more expensive. Ceramic discs offer stability at high temperatures and resistance to wear but can be costly and less effective at low temperatures.
Brake pads vary in friction material: semi-metallic pads are durable with good heat dissipation but can be noisy; organic pads are quieter but wear out faster; low-metal pads improve heat conduction and reduce stopping distance but increase dust; ceramic pads reduce disc wear but are expensive. Brake pads may also include electronic or mechanical wear sensors and are designed for either disc or drum brakes.
